End of year topic choice-Openings
Brassai
eBrassai used what was around him for inspiration. He photographed Paris, and focused on certain areas around the city. Lighting was very important to him and he often made sure that the lighting was right for his subject. If it was not, he used additional lighting to create the surreal effect which he wanted. He wanted to create an felling of love and passion in his midnight in paris, his images are at times quite romantic. I think that the romance has been created by the framing, composition and lighting and the angle of the camera; I find that Brassai
I decided to look at Brassai for this topic as I found his images very interesting. The ones which I chose to look at are all in black and white and they look they they have been created a long time ago. They dont really have a vintage feel to them. They made me curious as they are dark and mysterious and I was attracted too them as they remind me of images from a detective series. I particularly love the lighting is bright and I feel that this light enhances the mood of the image, it allows me to process different thoughts in my mind as I look at the images, and stories begin to appear. I can think of a title for each image as the images are so descriptive, so thought provoking. The one with the bridge for example makes me think of a meeting in a quiet area with no-one else around. Within the composition the photographer has captured a whole 'scene', whilst there is not a great deal to look at he has focused on a particular item within the composition which creates a scene. With some of the images there is not a great deal to look at, for example the image of the road side is a simple yet effective image. I like the curve of the road which takes up most of the image and I love the lighting which seems to be taken from the street light , so Brassai has used what has been made available to him. This lighting has created a lot of contrast, You can clearly see where the light from the street light falls on the image, whereas if this was created with added light such as a flashlight for example, there would not be as much contrast in the image.

For my end of year project I chose opening as my project to do because I have never explored openings and it seemed quite cool when first read about it, maybe to some people openings is just like the opening of a door or a window but openings can be much more you could have the essential in the photo but if people are just controlled into looking at one part of the photo it can get boring unless u as the photographer or as the viewer can see the true story behind the photo, and that why I chose openings to so the story behind the photo.
Evaluation of first photoshoot
These are the photographs which I took around the school. I wanted to explore the theme of openings straight away. I used an I-pod and explored all of the openings around the school. I don't feel that I was that focused when I took these images and also I didn't think enough about the subject and about what I wanted from the images. I didn't have enough of a concept or idea, I was very obvious with my thinking, and so the images are very similar and they don't really work well as they don't relate to the theme that much, I found them uninteresting.
Some of the images have worked quite well, particularly the one with the string, and the one where I have used the tree as an opening and the one where there is a narrow opening, I think that these ones worked well because I have approched openings in a different way, a more abstract way, and the concept was quite broad.

ralph gibson
Ralph gibson quite a well known photographer i like him because his photos are like feelings theres sad ones lonely ones and ones about freedom he's sort of photos can bring any emotion up it he dose not tell a story through thoughts but through feelings, its not a photo to me its an emotion covered by a photo the way he blends the lighting to make sure the lighting is not to under exposed but not to over exposed and the angle he captures some of his photos changes the consepts of it. Ralph was born in 1939 in L.A ralph started his work in the 1950s working as a student in the us navy photography then went on to do countless of other thing like assist Robert Frank and Deothea Lange in the 1960s and has won quite a few award such as the FTOT mentor lifetime award.
This is my favourite photo because the photo has captured two people roaming free with no care in the world and the way he has captured it through a window with a street of houses and the field with the trees that makes the image for me the landscape is not to in your face and not to far away so it makes feel like your there i also like this photo because it has a question inside of it. Because you ask your self were are they going who are the meeting theres a whole wide spread if questions you could ask.
RALPH GIBSON
I like this photo because to me it reminds me of alice in wonderland the fairy tale the hole she falls through, the contrast makes me think of lots of different childhood memories such as hide and seek and made up story but the way this photo is positioned and blurred at the back and clear in focus so u can see all the colours more clearly and the green, brown, red all mix together to make a very vibrant vibe and brightness to the bush.
I decided to change this photos and over expose them as a experimentation, i wanted to do this because it was different and it was something different to do with the image and i think it made the images better.
my evaluation
for my end of year topic i chose opening because to me it was my first thing i saw so i looked through it and then i went out and experimented and based me opening around nature and see how many different types of openings i could find in a nature environment then i came back and researched about two artists called ralph gibson and brassia to help me for when i went out to experiment this helped me because i could illustrate there types of photography in to my pieces then when i had my final 5 photos that i was happy with i looked at man-ray and used his style of photos to go into the dark room to make my photos into photograms and then i experimented for a week until i got the right aperture witch was 5.6 and 4 seconds so it would make my photo bright but very distinctive on the main part of the image, so that you could still make out what the image was but was still very absurd, i wanted to make my photos very bright because it was more interesting to look at and over exposed.
