Unit 1 evaluation
Over the course of this GCSE photography course I have experimented with many techniques and processes including experimenting in the darkroom with techniques such as photograms, cyanotypes and pinhole photography. This was the first time I used the darkroom and used chemicals to help me to produce photographs without using a camera.I also learnt how to use light to help me to produce photographs, for example I learnt how to use the enlarger in order to control how much light goes onto the image to control the exposure. This was my first introduction to the aperture and it helped me to decide how much light to expose on an image. We looked at artists such as Man Ray and Laslo Moholy Nagy again this was an introduction to artists who I had not heard of
and it also introduced me to photographers who experimented with photography without using cameras. We when we first studied cyanotypes we looked at Anna Atkins I discovered her work through research and her cyanotypes, the work which interested me was her images of garden flowers and how she turns them into interesting and eye catching images; The thing I like the most is that she makes all the photos blue and white and the white is very bright. We also did pinhole photography and I used a biscuit tin to make a camera, I made several exposures and most of them didn't turn out to well it took me some time to get the hang of it and I had to experiment with the exposure times and the aperture which was the pinhole.
We then moved on to various longer projects such as light painting with in light painting we looked at frank Gilberth, man ray and john Hesketh, and in light painting i learned how to use the aperture and i also learnt how to change the shutter speed on a camera and we also learned how to take multipul images we did this in class using the light and black screen we also done Street photography as a project, in street photography i learnt how to use a variety of different apps and cameras such the blender app and ipods and digital cameras we also looked at a variety of different artists like bruce Glendale and harry Callahan in street photography i lernt how to use pinhole photography and ipods.
we also learnt about Abstraction within abstraction i learnt how to take normal photos and use photoshop to turn them into abstract images and i learnt how to use different objects in a ordinary way, we also looked at openings we lernt about how to take photos of openings and what we could add in with opening to make a good photo like we used the formal elements and what kind of objects we could use. Another topic we looked at was contrast in contrast we learnt that a photo can be over exposed and under exposed to make it stand out but still be simple and where to find the best source of light, we also looked at the absurd topic within that topic i looked at Michael Huges and his way of making his own absurd images interested me and influenced me to make my own absurd imagery .
