Ed coleman's gcse photography portfolio
For this topic i chose repetition for my end of year topic, I chose this because i know that it will be the best topic for me to experiment and i also think that the topic is a fun topic, I'm also glad i chose this topic because repetition is a theme where you can really explore each kind of theme within repetition, looking at Clark Goolsby's at rest piece this piece inspired me to do repetition because it showed me that i can expand my limits on what objects and setting i can use and i am looking forward to learning about repetition, and using pintrest and the experiments using photoshop ect.
Maurizio Galimberti
Maurizio Galimberti has created an image which is a huge photo grid which was created by combining a series of images and blended them together which causes the effect of repetition, in this photograph there are lots of images of the same man in a tuxedo with a plain black background, I would use to describe this photo as eye-catching, inquisitive and deranged, because the image is constructed of many smaller images. If i was describing this photo to someone who couldn't see it I would say, that there is a multiple set of images of one man at a 90 degree angel each way gripping his hands together standing in a dark room wearing a tuxedo with a light shining over him. This photograph is abstract because this photo is lots of different photos. there is no space represented. There is only one person in the image which has been taken at different angles and either used Photoshop to mirror or taken multiple images and repeated them to form the grid. I think that he has used a digital camera and Photoshop to create these images It reminds me of tiles from my bathroom with images on, it is also like a photo montage. All of the shapes are geometric shapes which form a square overall image which looks like an ordinary photo.
The photo itself is dark in the back room and the foreground is lighter at the sides and on the person which shows that either a flash was used or studio lighting. It creates an image from dreams. I can see in the image that the shape created is a circular one made by the way in which the image was put together.I would name this image sophisticated circle as the image has a circular design and the people within the image are dressed in a elegant clothing. I think that the image could represent a meeting, perhaps a gentleman's club.
Peter de lory
Peter De Lory wanted to involve himself with all his in many different aspects as he could to make the photos more related to him as a person. he began taking photos of landscapes in cape cod at a young age, he was surrounded by beautiful scenery such as oceans and greenery.
The theme of this photo is repetition we can see repetition in this photo from the row of birds, in this photo i can see a row of birds, the background is unfocused but it look like an ordinary street in the 50/60 era. a few of the words of how i would describe this photo would be old fashioned, simple and imaginative. I like the way that Peter De Lory chose this specific angle to capture the line of birds but also capturing and ordinary street even though the street is unfocused. if i was describing this photo i would say that peter de lory was on top of a building and to a picture of a line of pigeons with a ordinary 50/60s era busy street. I like the soft tone around the pigeons but has a harsh tone on the birds and i think the black and white theme gives the photo a simple effect.
I took inspiration from Maurizio Galimberti's images which then lead me to take my own set of images which are displayed above. From what I have researched, it became clear that his technique of repetition was by simply layering the same image several time; I have recreated this in my own form just by having more than one of the same image next to each other.
this is my favourite image because the flash from the camera hitting the water and the glass gives the jar and water a abstract effect with this image i was experimenting different ways to use my flash for one and different objects to use in repartition. With this photo i went to a non light up place and place the glass jar on a bannister and aimed the flash directly at the middle of the water so the flash would spread out through the jar and the water, i took the photo from a straight on angle, to get the repetition effect from a app by just adding the image side by side.
I wanted to do a visual brainstorm of imagery around the school which represented repetition so I took photographs of various locations within school where I saw objects or shapes being repeated. What I liked about the photographs is that each of them have interesting angles, which I didn't originally intend to do but realised after I took the images. I decided to develop this further by concentrating on the shapes within the angles.
I decided to take took photo of one of my school buildings and i decided to use absurd and strange angel with these angel's i wanted to take advantage of how strange they are and interpret repetition in my own way and style, i did this by using the same photo at different angels and made them faded and contrasted them to the sky.
i decided to take a photo of a bench in my school i used a photoshop to create a absurd photo i wanted to manipulate the photo using photoshop, i used my own style of repetition by overlaying the photo and turning it slightly to the right and slightly to the left and faded the photo to make the first photo simple and clear.
i wanted to carry on with the over lapping theme because it was more of a simple and neat way of doing repetition still using the influence of Maurizio Galimberti and his abstract way of doing repetition. i made this photo by using photoshop i wanted to use the influence of Maurizio Galimberti and my absurd idea to make and over lapping image.
Ètinne-jules marey uses movement in his photos as a form of repetition this is effective because there is lots of different types of movement and things you can do to make a different variety of photos. I think all of his photos went well including the one with the birds flying because the use of light painting was well used also the photo with the man moving his body from left to right repeatedly.
Ètinne-jules marey has inspired me to take photos like him with or without using light painting.

experimentation
I developed this image via photoshop, as you can clearly see above. I was inspired by Etinne-Jule's work and decided to take up my own version of this. The juxtaposition of the black and white were intended to enhance the image's purpose.; such that it highlights the darker areas where I wanted my main focus to be. Three words I would use to describe these images would be bright, focused and imaginative
I have experiment a little more with an app from my phone. I took these images with my I-phone and I edited them with the App called Layout. I wanted to try further experimentation with repetition inspired by Maurizio Galimberti. I wanted to use this app as I have already used this for an earlier experiment but that involved people and I wanted to try this again using a variety of lines which I saw all over the image because this makes the photos simple and effective line is also one of the formal elements and is a interesting concept
Idris Khan
Idris Kahn repetition is very important in his work and so is limited processes , his photo consist of layers which have been adjusted. He normal takes photos of buildings and he use mostly geometric shapes he made them into a dark, mysterious and ghostly set of images, most of his photos are in black and white he gets this effect by using a ethereal effect, he first used Digital tech and he used other peoples work.
this photo from Idris Khan is my favourite because it is very disorientated and shows signs of lines i also like it because it is a normal angle and the black and white theme he has used because it makes the image stand out and make it more dramatic and relatable to people who live on the estate because even thought its dark and simple it is different and abstract.
1st experimentation
From doing research on Idris Khan he influenced me to overlap images, i edited theses images on photoshop as shown in the screenshots above i wanted to use different types of repetition in my photos thats why i used different colours in some photos and different exposer levels and contrasts types to makes certain parts of the photo stand out, i wanted to capture lines within my photos because they are the most simple but effective to repeat which makes my photos different and because its one of the formal elements also because i find lines and interesting topic . I used a digital camera and a Iphone for theses photos.
this image worked the best because it is exactly what i aimed for, i like this image because it reminds me of Idris khan's style of repetition and thats what i wanted but with some of my ideas as well and i also added the concept of line because its very interesting when its repeated. I edited this photo on photoshop by over laying the image three times and turning the down opacity only on two images and the turning up the brightness and the contras of background, i took this photo on a digital camera. This image is my favourite because the many lines all seem to add up and make this photo eye catching and i also like the abstract angel i choose to use.
2nd experimentation
i stilled wanted to use the over lapping theme with my photos, so i decided to take another three images and edit them on photoshop but i wanted to change it slightly so i used a tool called the graindient tool and added very strong colours too two of the photo to make them bold and bright i chose colours so that the fusion of the two colours wasn't confusing and odd, with theses photos i used a mixture of ideas from Idris Khan, Maurizio Galimberti and Peter De Lory to make these photos and i also used weird and simple angels to get this final out come.
this is my favourite image because the complementary colours make the image stand, the yellow in the sky makes the photo very attractive to look at and i also like this way of repetition because its very simple but effective, this photo reminds me of a tower block as well because of the way i have edited it on photoshop and the angel is a very simple standard angel because it is a just a straight forward angel just the image is over laid a series of times to create this effect.
this is my final piece i chose this 4 images because they are my most thought out and inspired images from all my work i have done because the have my style of repetition in them and influences for all of the artists i have researched about over this topic and i wanted to also use line within my images and complementary colors to make my images more vibrant and eye catching and i also wanted to use abstract angels vs normal angels and they both worked.
final evaluation
The theme I chose for unit 2 was repetition because i felt like i could relate this topic more then the others and i thought i could get the best possible images from this topic, the first things i did was write about why i chose the topic and what interested me about repetition then looked through pintrest and pined photos that inspired me and made a collage out of the photos, thirdly i made a popplet. the first person i researched was Maurizio Galimberti and i looked at the way he cuts up his images into small boxes this inspired me to use shape in my first experimentation, then i looked at Peter De Lory and from looking at his work i started to use natural repetition of living things and normal objects then i experimented with shapes and within normal day life, thirdly i researched about Ètinne-jules marey and she used light painting to create a abstract image and she inspired me too use photoshop so i started taking photos and over lapping the and turning them to different angles and fading them in to the original image then i took another series of images and added complementary colours to them to make them vibrant and bright i got this idea from looking at the sky and how blue and vibrant the colour was then i looked at the building and saw how dull and colourless from a past image, lastly i looked at idris khan and how he over laps his images lots and lots of times and only moving his image to one side slightly and then i chose my four final pieces and evaluated them.
